DIY Electrics: Assessing Safety and Knowing When to Stop

When I bought my first home, I could only afford one that was a bit worn down. As we didn't have a lot of money to pay a contractor, my partner and I did a lot of the work ourselves. While we were keen to tackle drywall, rip up and replace flooring and paint everything, we were a bit scared of the electrics. The house was old, and it had suffered from water damage. I wasn't sure what was safe and what wasn't. However, I learned a lot about electrics along the way, and I fell in love with the topic. I want to help others in the same situation so decided to start this blog. My name is Kate, and welcome.

3 Signs You Need Immediate Commercial Electrical Services

It is a common practice for electricians to tuck away all wires behind walls when installing electricity in commercial premises. While this allows for a safe and clean installation, it makes it harder for you to detect some electrical faults in time, leading to extensive electrical problems upon damage or failure.

Luckily, electrical problems will display various signs that indicate that a serious problem is looming behind your walls. The following are some indications that you need professional commercial electrical services immediately.

Some Power Outlets Are Producing Strange Sounds

All your power outlets and light switches should always be silent regardless of how many appliances you rely on in your electrical system. If you hear a strange sound coming from your electrical sockets and plugs, you have a problem that requires immediate electrical services. In most cases, the problem occurs when your electrical system has a wiring problem.

Once you notice a strange sound in your power outlets, unplug any electrical appliance from the noisy outlet and plug in a different appliance to see if the sound persists. If this is the case, avoid using the outlet until a professional electrician checks out the problem.

There is a Burning Smell in Your Commercial Space

A burning smell is a clear indication that you might have an electrical problem on your premises. The situation is more serious when the scent is from a power outlet because it can lead to an electrical fire. If you notice a burning smell in your commercial space, inspect your electrical outlets and appliances to determine the source.

If you fail to identify the source, contact a commercial electrician to deduce the problem. Your electrical expert will assess the electrical system to determine if the issue arises from exposed wiring or a sparking outlet. They will then conduct the necessary repairs to prevent fire hazards.

Some of Your Fixtures Are Abnormally Hot

Light bulbs should never be too hot to touch, even after running for hours. If any of your light fixtures are abnormally hot to the touch, there is a possibility you have improper bulbs, or there might be too much wattage on your electrical system.

The problem could also result from a lack of enough insulation on your fixtures. Hot outlets and switches also indicate a serious electrical problem that only an experienced electrical expert can handle.

It is easy to overlook most electrical problems, especially if they present any serious issues at the time. That said, things can get out of control if you don't take immediate action when you notice any of the above-stated problems. It is highly advisable to switch off your electricity and unplug all electrical appliances whenever you notice a minor issue with your electrical system to avoid serious problems down the line. Hire a reputable commercial electrician to inspect and repair your electrical system immediately.
